Swimming is not only a lot of fun, it’s a great way to get exercise. But you want everyone to be completely safe while they’re having a great time. With summer right around the corner, this is a good opportunity to make sure you know how to create the safest environment possible around your pool.

Keeping Children Protected

If you have children in your pool, make sure they are never left alone without supervision – not even for a minute. There should always be an adult present whenever children are swimming. This will be especially important if there are children under the age of 5.

Also, there should be a fence that runs completely around the pool. This fence needs to be at least four feet high, because you never know when neighborhood children might wander onto your property. You don’t want to run the risk of them getting into the pool when nobody’s home.

The gates should open outward from the pool and should be self-latching. The latch needs to be placed where a small child can’t reach it. You can also have an alarm installed to notify you if someone tries to open the gate.

In addition, you’ll want to have plenty of safety equipment on hand. This includes a tool known as a shepherd’s hook, which is a long pole with a hook at the end. A shepherd’s hook can be used to get someone out of the water if they are struggling. Keep a cell phone nearby just in case you need to get emergency medical help.
